Rhea County Historical Society
The Rhea County Historical Society, formerly Rhea County Historical & Genealogical Society, was established to preserve, document, and promote the rich history and genealogical heritage of Rhea County, Tennessee. Dedicated to safeguarding the region’s past, the society has played a crucial role in collecting historical records, artifacts, and oral histories that reflect the county’s development from its early settlement to the present day.
The society actively works to maintain and provide access to historical resources, assisting researchers, genealogists, and historians in uncovering Rhea County’s legacy. Over the years, it has contributed to the preservation of significant sites, including the Rhea County Courthouse, famously associated with the 1925 Scopes Trial. Through publications, educational programs, and community outreach, the RCHS fosters a deeper understanding of the county’s history, ensuring that future generations remain connected to their heritage.
In addition to maintaining archives and historical collections, the society collaborates with local institutions and state organizations to enhance preservation efforts. It has published books, compiled cemetery records, and documented historical landmarks, further solidifying its role as a cornerstone of historical and genealogical research in Rhea County. Today, the Rhea County Historical Society continues its mission of preserving and sharing the county’s vibrant history, making it accessible to scholars, residents, and history enthusiasts alike.
RCHS operates the Rhea Heritage and Scopes Trial Museum, where visitors can view and enjoy various artifacts concerning the Scopes Trial and the many facets of Rhea County’s rich history.
