Hicks Law Office
Scopes Trial prosecutors Herbert E. Hicks and Sue K. Hicks operated their law office on the second floor of this building. Sue Hicks, who frequently double-dated with John T. Scopes, was named after his mother, Susana Hicks, who passed away shortly after his birth. His unusual name later inspired the hit Johnny Cash song A Boy Named Sue.
As the first prosecutor to personally reach out to William Jennings Bryan about the case, Hicks played a key role in securing support for the trial, even raising funds for the prosecution. During the proceedings, when Clarence Darrow was cited for contempt of court, the Hicks brothers and fellow prosecutor Wallace Haggard urged Judge Raulston to show leniency. Raulston ultimately forgave Darrow but later questioned whether he had erred in not sentencing him.
